New Combinations

by Eric Jacobson, arr. by Sam Fettig

Jazz Ensemble Grade 3

ABOUT THE SONG

New Combinations is a vibrant swing tune composed by trumpeter Eric Jacobson, and was recorded on his album “Discover” on Origin Records in 2023.

The song utilizes a 32 measure AB form in two 16 measure parts. The first half of each section differs, while the second half of each section is virtually the same. There is a vamp which sometimes extends the form between choruses.

There are a number of recurring ensemble rhythmic figures that help both players and listeners follow the form.

ABOUT THE ARRANGEMENT

New Combinations was arranged to feature its composer as trumpet soloist. The full ensemble plays a fiery 16 measure introduction before the solo trumpet plays one chorus of the head (melody). The second chorus beginning at measure 55 is an improvisation feature for the same soloist. The winds come in full force at measure 87 - but it’s to trade fours with the soloist who has more to say!

Measure 103 begins a series of solis and full ensemble features. Then the reins are given back to the featured soloist who states the head one last time.

The coda has a vamp that can be opened for any soloist. A separate solo guide is available.

We hope you enjoy this optimistic hard swinging tune by Eric Jacobson!
