DISCOVER
by Eric Jacobson, arr. by Sam Fettig
Jazz Ensemble Grade 2.5
ABOUT THE SONG
Discover is a slow bossa nova with a 16 bar AB form. It was composed by trumpet recording artist Eric Jacobson, and is the title track of his 2023 release on Origin Records.
The chord progression can be thought of as a series of two measure moments, shifting back and forth between major, minor, diminished, and dominant chords, making it an excellent study piece for the most common tonalities found in jazz music. In fact, the first eight measures alternates between a concert F major chord and a concert D diminished chord (two measures each). This is the hook that provides Discover’s rich and beautiful quality.
ABOUT THE ARRANGEMENT
The eight measure introduction is a harmonized transcription of the solo piano intro played by Bruce Barth on the studio version of Discover. All members of the band are encouraged to check it out.
The first chorus through the form begins at measure 9, and features solo trumpet. The second chorus starts at measure 25 and is played by the full ensemble, with featured moments for all sections.
This is followed by an open solo section, and a solo guide sheet is provided for all instruments. Backgrounds are to be played when cued, and are recommended for a soloist’s second chorus (if applicable), and certainly the very last solo chorus.
A shout chorus starting at measure 58 builds up energy before handing it back to solo trumpet - who ultimately takes the song to an ending cadenza.
We hope you enjoy this piece and “Discover” the beauty that can be found in the exploration of jazz harmony.
