The Unknown

by Eric Jacobson, arr. by Sam Fettig

Jazz Ensemble Grade 3

ABOUT THE SONG

The Unknown, by Eric Jacobson, is an introspective piece that swings hard over a loose 6/8 Afro-Cuban feel. It was recorded on Eric’s 2023 release on Origin Records titled ”Discover”.

The overall mood of the piece is driven by the minor tonality. There is exactly one major chord in the entire song - it is found in the first measure of the bridge, which provides a distinct departure at that moment.

ABOUT THE ARRANGEMENT

The 6/8 Afro Cuban feel (written in 4/4) is unique in that it is closely married to the straight ahead swing groove played during the bridge. Students will learn that all notes are swung in the same manner regardless of whether the rhythm section is playing Afro Cuban or swing. As such, important concepts regarding swing figures and interpretation should be applied to the entire chart.

The introduction is the first 13 measures, with the form/head/melody beginning at measure 14. The solo section is the entire AABA form from measure 46-77. It can be repeated for a longer solo or additional player(s). The solo send off at measure 47, as well as all backgrounds, are to be played every time.

Throughout the chart are rhythms requiring your careful attention to the value of any note preceding a rest. Measures 25, 27 and 28 are good examples; the half note should end precisely on beat 3.
